Some of you'll already know me from my YouTube or social media channels. Most of what I do there is talk about money and look at what's happening in the wider world, for the people who haven't got the time to keep up with it themselves.

Well before I made videos, I spent over 10 years in the British Army, including tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. I ended up as one of the youngest Sergeants along the way. There was the escape and evasion side of the training too, and enough jumping out of planes to know when I was probably too high up to be comfortable about it.

So looking after myself when things go wrong isn't exactly new to me. But the thing that really opened my eyes wasn't a warzone at all, but it was everyday life…

In the next few minutes I want to tell you about some of the most unsettling experiences of my life, and how it pushed me to build the most complete disaster readiness guide I've ever put my name to.

Something that opened my eyes to a hard truth…

We've become dangerously fragile, completely dependent on systems that can disappear overnight, and on people who can change the rules of our lives with barely any warning.

So there we were, stuck in a strange apartment with nothing much to eat except canned olives, crackers and some tuna. We didn't manage to get any more food until much later. It doesn't sound like much when you say it out loud, but sitting there with no idea how long it would go on for, it was honestly frightening.

And it didn't end when the supposed holiday did. When we finally got a flight home to the UK, four days later, one of the first things we did was head to the supermarket. This was a big Tesco at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry, one of the largest supermarkets in Europe. But guess what? The shelves were completely empty. We were lucky, because we had supplies in at home, but there wasn't a scrap of fresh food to be found anywhere.

That was the moment it really clicked for me. The instincts were there, but on that trip I simply hadn't packed for it.

Because here's the thing. Even with all that training behind me, I still got caught out.

And honestly, it wasn't the first time. When I was preparing for special forces selection, I was in such a rush to get out the door and drive up to the mountains that I left my food and my water bottle behind, and I didn't even notice until I was stood at the top. I had to walk all the way back down to drink from a stream, and ended up asking one of the other lads if I could have the half of his sandwich he hadn't finished.

Even out on field operations it happened. There were plenty of times as a soldier when I ran out of food, but the one thing I always made sure I had was water. You can last a surprisingly long time without eating, but water is the thing you can't do without, and that lesson has stuck with me ever since.

So by the time those shelves emptied in Spain, I already knew how fast the things we take for granted can vanish. The people who cope when something goes wrong are nearly always the ones who thought about it beforehand, and that's really all this guide is.

The modern world is far more fragile

We think our towns and cities will always have water, power, order and food on the shelves. But when those systems go down, the same place we rely on every day can turn into a trap.

Out in the field I can look after myself. There's water to find, a fire to get going, and food to dig up if you know where to look. In a town that we live in, it's a lot more different and requires a different type of prep. Once the power's off and the shops are shut, that's it. Thankfully after a (long) while, things slowly started getting back to normal, and we came through it fine. But something in me had shifted for good, and I couldn't shake the feeling that this had been a taste of something bigger.

So I went deeper into this than I ever had before.

And what I uncovered sent shivers down my spine…

• Venezuela. Oil-rich, modern, but collapsed in a decade. Prices doubled every few weeks, so shopkeepers stopped counting notes and weighed them instead. A lifetime of savings was suddenly worthless.
• Argentina, 2001. The banks froze everyone's accounts overnight. You could see your money, but you could only take out 250 pesos a week. Naturally there were riots within the month.
• Texas, 2021. A winter storm froze the power stations just as everyone cranked the heating. The grid went dark for days, the taps ran dry, and over 200 people died, a lot of them frozen in their own homes.
• Bosnia, in the 90s. A town of 6,000 gets cut off for a year. Food ran out and money became worthless, so everything ran on barter.
• Paradise, California, 2018. A wildfire hit so fast people had mere minutes to run. The ones who stopped to get supplies, cash, their important documents etc, unfortunately didn't make it.

These were real accounts and recorded incidents, ladies and gents, not just conspiracy theories or stories to scare you.

The more of these I read, the more one thing stood out. These weren't soldiers or survival nuts. They were ordinary people with jobs and families, and nobody ever warned them what was coming.

That's when it dawned on me…
